Introduction to a Girl Who Hates Free Time

Hey everyone! My name is Maria Shedler and I am a Senior here at the best University on Earth. I am earning my Bachelor of Administration degree in Business Marketing and I was fortunate enough to love it from the beginning, and never have to go through the stress of changing my major. This is part of the reason why I am set to graduate a semester early in December. When I tell people this, they often ask if I'm excited to graduate and start this next chapter in my life. To which I tell them that while of course I'm excited to finally get my degree, I am also extremely sad to be leaving the University of Oklahoma and all the wonderful people within early.

Throughout my 3 years here, I have been extremely involved on campus from the beginning. I am involved in Greek life where I've held numerous positions within my chapter ranging all the way from Social Chair, to Marketing Chair, even positions such as University Sing, Sooner Scandals, and Homecoming Chairs. These last three positions hold a special place in my heart and i have been happy to serve these positions since Freshman year when I couldn't wait to dive in. I have also had to the honor to be involved with OU's very own Panhellenic Association where I served as a recruitment guide for the sweet incoming freshman girls looking for their forever home. Outside of Greek life, I have been a member of organizations such as Women in Business Association, Sigma Alpha Lambda Honor Society, and Phi beta Delta Society for International Scholars since my freshman year as well. I have served positions on CAC executive committees and am apart of the OU Elite Dance Team.
If you couldn't tell, I hate having free time.

As I mentioned above, University Sing, Homecoming, and Sooner Scandals are all extremely important to me. However, Sooner Scandals takes the biggest place in my heart. If you don't know what I'm talking about, this is a musical that organizations, in and outside of Greek life, create to perform in a University-wide showcase. Once the organizations are paired they choose a theme, songs, write a script, choreograph, and audition their show. Once they have their cast, they rehearse for eight hours each week to prepare for the real audition.

As a dancer, Sooner Scandals allows me to still create pieces like I once did in high school. It also allows people from all different backgrounds to work together and bond so closely. I can easily say that this has been my favorite experience that I have had in my time at the University of Oklahoma.

  1. Hi Maria! I graduate in December also and I am in the same boat as you about leaving OU. It is exciting to be graduating college, but it will be extremely difficult to leave OU. The environment is so friendly and as cheesy as it sounds, it is like a big family! Thanks for clarifying what Sooner Scandals is. I have always seen people talk about it but never fully understand what it was. I think that it sounds like a fun activity and I am glad that you enjoy it so much!

  2. What a list of activities, Maria: I definitely believe that you are very busy, and with a very organized daybook! If there is an Elite Dance Team event that I can include in the announcements, or any other event you are involved in, let me know. I always include an event in the day's announcements, and the best events are the ones that people are involved in... and you are involved in so many events! So definitely let me know when there is something exciting to include in the announcements.

  3. Hi Maria!
I am also graduating in December, but mine has been a long time coming and several changes in my major until I FINALLY discovered the one I love. And WOW! you have a long list of activities, I wonder how do you ever find time to study or relax?! I am truly amazed on your list of organizations, I find myself barely having time to relax between class homework and work alone. I do make time for family friends and even my hobbies, even if it mean forgoing homework for a day (sometimes it is needed).

  4. Hi Maria! Wow, you have really had a university experience a lot people would envy! Finding your perfect fit in a major in your first semester and gotten to be involved in so many amazing things. I've heard a lot about sooner scandals and even seen some of the promotional videos for it and it looks like so much fun, both to participate and to go and see the show. Good luck on all of your work this semester and congratulation on your upcoming graduation this December!

  5. Hi Maria!
It was so inspiring to read about how involved you are on campus life and graduating early! It’s so cool that you loved your major from the beginning. I have more of a love-hate relationship with mine. Sooner Scandals sounds very interesting; I didn’t even know there was something like that on campus! Congratulations on your graduation in December!

  6. Hey Maria!
Wow that's awesome that you have the ability to pursue all this passions and be successful at each one. I can't imagine how you divide the time between each of them, you must be an organizational master. On top of that you're clearly a very talented dancer if you can make the dance team! I'll be graduating soon, perhaps this Fall, and I share your sentiments. I'm excited to move on to the next chapter but reluctant to leave this place behind. Best of luck this semester!

  7. Hey Maria!
I'm so jealous of you! I wish I had the mental fortitude and willingness to take part in so many clubs and activities. I already find it near impossible to juggle just my curricular studies. I wish that I could sometimes be more active though. However, unlike you, I love my free time. I can't imagine how you would dislike free time, but I guess you enjoy having things to do, which makes sense in a way. Maybe I'm the weird one, who knows. Sooner Scandals sounds like both fun and a horror to me. It'd be my nightmare to have to do that. But I'm sure that for the right person, it's really fun and rewarding. It looks like a lot of work!

  8. Hi Maria. Congrats for your upcoming graduation.
I would say that you are my admiration. I am totally different from you. I am kind of introvert person, but really want to be involved with people around. However, i couldn't do that since my workload capture almost all of the weekdays, and my part time job for the weekend. I don't know how can you use your time so wisely like that. Time to study, time for social activities, time for passions...Keep you always busy is a reason that you hate free time, i guess.
Anyway, nice to meet you and good luck for this semester!

  9. Hi Maria! I really liked reading about how motivated you are by Scandals and University Sing. As a director myself this year, I know how challenging it is and how much time it takes up in your life. I have absolutely no idea how to dance, so the fact that you can choreograph shows and picture entire dances in your head is amazing. You definitely inspire me, so keep up the good work!

  10. It's great that you are graduating a semester early! I decided not to participate in Greek life when I started school here, but it is always cool to hear about people who manage their extracurricular activities and their degree well. Applause for you! Sooner Scandals sounds really neat, I'll have to check that out. I went to a small fine arts high school and our dance program was always my favorite thing to experience. I personally wasn't a dancer but a ton of my friends were and the performances they gave were memorable and emotionally profound so much of the time. It was awesome! Thanks for sharing about yourself and have a good day!

  11. Hi Maria!

I think it is cool that you are graduating early. Last week I found out that I would probably be doing the same - it is terrifying. I see that you hate having free time and I think I am in the same boat. I am in 21 hours this semester so obviously I hate having fun or doing anything for fun - I am all about school. I think it is cool that you are involved in so much, it is definitely a plus to show in a resume for a future job that you are capable of so much.

  12. Hi Maria!
Funny enough I am also a senior marketing major who is graduating in 3.5 years! December is coming quick and like you, I am excited to have a degree and be done with school work but not so ready to leave this place.
I was also a dancer in high school so USing, Scandals, and Homecoming have had a huge impact on my college life.
Good luck with this last semester!

  13. Nice to meet you Maria!

Wow, I definitely feel as though I did not accomplish as much as I could during my undergraduate career at the University of Oklahoma. The fact you managed your time well enough to be so ahead in your major field and commit to some many different organizations at once is killer. Seriously it's super impressive to hear about and I'm sure you have a bomb resume. Good luck to all your future endeavors and I can't wait to read some of your stories.

  14. Hey Maria! That's incredibly impressive that you found the major you loved from the very beginning. I wish I'd been able to do that! That's also an insane list of organizations you've been involved in, I can see why you say you hate free time. It's crazy how close it is to December, I never thought I'd graduate, yet I'm less than 2 months away just like you! Good luck finishing up this semester!

  15. Hello Maria!

You weren't kidding when you said you were busy! I actually love all of the organizations you have listed! I am super excited to read your stories now because they will be influenced by the accumulation of all of these activities and more. I went to an elite dance team event once and they are incredible!! I have no doubts that I have probably met or seen you before, but who knows, it is a big campus.

  16. Wow, you sound like you have a lot going on. I am super impressed with your dedication to your hobbies. Sometimes it can be hard to make time for them, so I'm glad that you were able to find organizations on campus that you like spending time on. I have never heard of Sooner Scandals but it sounds really interesting. I'd love to see what people come up with, it sounds like a fun time. I was not really a musical or theater person in high school, but I had lots of friends who were and I had fun supporting them. Good luck with the rest of your semester!

  17. Hi Maria!
Unlike you I ended up changing my major my sophomore year and am so happy I did! That is great you knew what you wanted to do from the beginning. That is so great that you have been so involved at OU during your time here. That is the best thing anyone can do I think because I have loved getting involved as well! It truly enhances your college experience and allows you to meet so many awesome people. Best of luck with the rest of your semester!

  18. Hi Maria, I am also a business major here at OU, except I am double majoring in Entrepreneurship and International Business. I have always thought about minoring in Marketing, because I Prof. Schmidt for MKT 3013 and he made it so fun and interesting. I am glad you enjoy majoring in it! Good luck with the remainder of the semester!

  19. Hi Maria! I also love the University of Oklahoma and I am sad to leave. I will be graduating this coming May so I will have one more semester. I also hate free time but the past three years really took a toll on me, especially after starting my job. I get bored a lot this semester, but only in preparation for a tough next few years with grad school. Nice to meet you!

  20. Hi Maria! I’m glad to see how proud you are of OU. Yes, it’s the best on Earth!! That’s great that you didn’t have to change your major. I’ve changed my major three times, and Business Administration was my second choice haha.. Wow.. That’s amazing that you’re graduating a semester early! That really saves money and time. You really should be proud of your hard work and accomplishments! It’s nice to meet you Maria!
