Week 11 Story: The Killer Whale Servant

There once was a man and his wife that lived on the coast of Canada. They spent their days fishing and drying out what they caught for food. One day while they were out on the pier, they caught an unusual fish that they had never seen before. Assuming it was comparable to the fish they usually catch, they decided to keep it and the wife began to clean it as she normally does.

After it was hanging with the other fish, the woman walked to the end of the pier where she bent down to clean her hands from the remains of the strange fish. Just then, she was pulled underwater by an unknown force. Her husband immediately jumped in the water after her and found the Fish Chief to ask for help. He said that he had seen it happen and that the killer whales took her as a slave as revenge for catching and killing their friend.

Deep in the ocean was the killer whales’ home. It was here that they took the woman to be their servant. For the next three days, she waited on the whales, doing everything they asked of her while trying to come up with an escape plan.

On the fourth day, she decided that she had enough of the nonsense that they have put her through and begins to refuse to complete the assigned tasks. The lead killer whale would not take this disrespect inflicted upon him in front of his friends and confronted the woman. He told her that if she continued to refuse the tasks that he would kill her just as she had killed his friend.

Just as the woman was about to reject his orders again, the door burst open and a shark entered the house creating mayhem in his path. He lit a blazing fire and then put it out allowing the steam to cloud the vision of the whales. The woman rushed out of the house only to be greeted by her husband. He had come with the shark to save her and had orders to leave as soon as they were reunited. They both headed toward home and left the shark to defeat the killer whales.

Author’s note:
This is my adaption of the story The Woman Stolen by KillerWhales by Stith Thompson. The overall story is very similar to the original. However, the original story is focused on the steps that the husband took in order to save his wife and disregards what happens to the wife while she is held captive. This is why I decided to write in the story what she goes through.

  1. Hey Maria!

This story was very engaging and had quite a few twists about it. I think it was awesome of you to incorporate a sort of wildlife angle into the original tale. The image you included was great for me in regards to visualizing the story because it reminded me of the time that I saw a whale myself! It is rather incredible that these magnificent creatures exist alongside us.

  2. Hi Maria, this story was pretty cool. I read the original and so I wasn't entirely sure what to expect, but I liked how you focused on what the wife was doing as the killer whales' servant. The original shows how the husband goes about saving her, but your version is great because you describe her as someone fiery, who's not just going to sit there sadly waiting to be rescued. Love that. Also, you did a great job of getting a lot of action in without using so many words. I don't know if you can tell but I'm pretty long-winded, so I'm always impressed when people can write a great story adn keep it short and sweet. GJ!

  3. Hi Maria! I like how you made the background image go along well with the theme of your story. I also thought the story was pretty cool. It was short and sweet so that made it easier to read. I like how there were some twists in your story as well. That always makes it more fun for your reader when there are twists and turns. I also liked how you concluded your story with a very strong ending. Great job!

  4. Hi Maria, I really enjoyed reading this story, while I have not read the original, your author's note was clear on how you came up with your own story from it. I like that you decided to write it from what she had to go through instead. There were also many twists in your story that I did not expect, which kept me on my toes the whole time reading through. Good job!

  5. Hey Maria. I really enjoyed this story. I like the fact that even though the whales are underwater they had a house they lived in which the woman had to be their servant in as well. It was a little confusing on how there was fire lit underwater but I'm sure it's possible. I also want to know why the shark helped but I think that's probably part of the original story since it talks all about the steps.

I have not read the original so this was very interesting to read, and I am happy that it had a happy ending for the wife and husband! I look forward to reading more from you!
