Reading Notes: Robin Hood, Part B

The English and Scottish Popular Ballads by Francis James Child.

Part B of Robin Hood was just as interesting as part A. I feel as though the story lines throughout this section was more intriguing and exciting than that of the previous section. The whole story line really climaxed and I was interested to see how the ballad format would translate with such exciting story lines. Overall, I enjoyed reading Robin Hood. The ballad really brought the story to life and kept me on my toes.

Ovid's Metamorphoses Translated by Tony Kline (2000). Echo Characters: Bacchus, Echo, Narcissus, Tiresias, Jupiter, Juno Plot: Bacchus born twice, once when taken from womb, once when taken from thigh of Jupiter. Debate of who enjoys love more between Jupiter and Juno, asks Tiresias for opinion. Saturnia was upset with his judgement. Echo sees Narcissus and falls in love. Juno curses Echo to only repeat what is last spoken. Echo followed Narcissus, he calls out and she responds with what she can embraces him and he runs from her. Jewish Fairy Tales and Legends by Gertrude Landa The Sleep of One Hundred Years: setting: Jerusalem post war  weary man traveling though he will not eat or drink what he has with him incase someone needs them more than he does saw Jerusalem and began to weep, eventually fell asleep was asleep for 100 years, woke up as if it was a nights sleep and saw the vegetation that regrown from his food supply  made way to the city and found his grandson, he felt like a stranger because so much had changed he returned to the tree where he fell asleep to sleep again King for Three days:  cruel warrior who wanted to murder the children of Israel and all jews, thought they were performing a sacred act  wanted to obtain the blessing of the rabbi, rabbi refused to give it  instead he tells the soldier that he will both succeed and fail succeed: Jerusalem will fall to him making him king, but only for 3 days warrior gets mad and curses the rabbi if she is ...

Reading Notes: California and the Old Southwest , Part B

Myths and Legends of California and the Old Southwest by  Katharine Berry Judson (1912). Part B of the this unit of stories focused a lot of the origin of different places and animals. I thought that this was an interesting way to tell the stories of the beginnings of things. These stories were told more traditionally, with little dialogue. My favorite story from this part of the unit is How the Bluebird and the Coyote Got Their Colors. I enjoyed this tale because it reminded me of a children's story, very innocent and sweet.
